Seduced by the city, Jean Pierre Muller offers us a vision of urban life as a myriad of colour and a multitude of characters, interweaved with the lines of the cityscape. His infatuation is not to do with architecture, more “the intense congregation of human beings and their vibrancy: the one million novels that could be written; the one euro coin that has passed through a million pairs of hands”.
Clearly a lover of narrative, his show comprises, for the first time ever, an introspective look into the story of his own practice. Preparatory drawings have been uncovered, sketchbooks of newspaper clippings opened, and unseen works exposed. Along with the works and styles we know him so well for – silk-screen cities on paper, metal silhouette portraits, printed palisades – Jean Pierre will also present his latest body of work, Ulysses, based upon the story of Homer’s poem The Odyssey.
This show is a prelude to an upcoming solo exhibition in the UK. Furthermore, following on from his collaboration with artist Sean O’Hagan on the project Musical Paintings, Jean Pierre has worked with seven of the world’s most renowned musicians to develop his combined interests in music and painting through a series of interactive sound sculptures titled 7x7 to be launched in the UK in the summer of 2012.
